Summer break is on the horizon! Check out these simple tips that will help you navigate toward the best summer camp for your child. more tips from Kid Ventures >>

With summer around the corner all our minds are turning to summer holiday planning and choosing the right summer camp for our child. Here are some quick tips to help you pick a winner — and help your kid have an awesome summer break!

DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Spend some time researching the camps you are interested in & make sure they have experienced and qualified staff and a good camper to counselor ratio. Talk to the facility directors, & your friends and family to learn about the camps history, safety standards & reputation.

FUN FACTOR
Look for camps that offer a wide variety of activities, themes and developmental games to keep your kids stimulated physically, socially and emotionally. If you know your child is having the time of his/her life while also developing valuable skills, you’ll be more likely to enjoy your day too.

REAL LIFE RELEVANCE
Look for camps that are relevant to the themes of the year! For instance, this year is an Olympic Year. Camps that relate to the summer olympics will not only be FUN for your child, but it will give you the opportunity to make the connection at home and get your child talking & thinking about real life scenarios. This expands their mind & awareness in a fun way.

So remember, don’t just sign your child up for camp, take the time to give them an experience of a lifetime with the perfect Summer camp!

It's raining & pouring....What a great opportunity to enjoy creative play indoors! more tips from Kid Ventures >>

Just because it’s cold and rainy outside, doesn’t mean your kids have to be bored. Turn off the television, shut down the computer and unplug the video games and have some fun!

Set up an Art Station
Take a few extra minutes to gather art supplies from around your house, these can be conventional or creative items (crayons, markers, paper, aluminum foil, buttons, sequins—avoid glitter though!). Spread these items out on a table cloth or something than can easily be whipped clean, either on the floor or on a table. This becomes your child’s “art station”. With everything easily accessible, allow your child to engage in a variety of creative activities that could easily last hours!

Host an Indoor Picnic or Tea Party
Plan this indoor picnic or tea party just like you would any other. Pack up delicious snacks and drinks into your basket, and get out folding chairs and blankets. Have your picnic or tea party somewhere unconventional, like under the kitchen table or on the living-room floor. Surround yourselves with pillows and finger foods and encourage the children to wear their picnic clothes, safari costumes, animal outfits, or tea attire to get them in the mood.

Allow Extra Bath Time
Generally, we reserve bathroom time for serious business, but on a rainy day– the bathroom can easily transform into a battleship station, a mermaid’s lagoon– or a spa! Don’t fret; playing in the tub or sink doesn’t have to turn into a huge mess as long as rules are lined up first. Have your children take a bath with different sized cups, spoons, sponges and containers. Allow the kids to practice pouring and soaking up the water. For extra fun, add food coloring to the bath water and experiment with color mixing. And afterall… isn’t this a sneaky way to get your child to bathe?

Plan an Indoor Treasure Hunt or Scavenger Hunt
This activity takes a little planning, but is always a huge hit with kids. Leave a trail of clues around the house and have each clue lead to the next so that your kids are traveling all around the house on this treasure hunt. You can even have them answer trivia questions to receive clues too! The final “treasure” could be anything; ingredients to make hot cocoa, a new book, logos, coloring books etc. The real prize is the activity itself!

Get out of the House, and come to KV!
As always, Kid Ventures is a great escape on rainy days–and any day! Let your child explore all the different themed areas inside KV’s indoor play center, and even enjoy a play date—for you and your child!

We certainly all love a good story, especially one that helps us appreciate something we already enjoy in our life. In fact, you may not realize the terrific story behind some of the things that make Kid Ventures so special. Have you ever stopped to consider where the tasty KV treats you love so much come from? Of course not—you are too busy enjoying them! How about Kid Ventures itself? Who dreamed up such a wonderful idea? The answer to this question and many more is simple…women.

Many of the delicious goods at the KV Café are supplied not only by local vendors, but many are provided by women owned businesses in San Diego. Sweet Cheeks, Baked in the Sun, Zanzibar Café, and Café Virtuoso are just a few examples of locally women owned businesses Kid Ventures proudly supports.

Kid Ventures has also partnered with many mom owned and operated organizations. Through the past year, Kid Ventures has built a strong relationship with such mom-lead organizations as Sign4Baby & Positively Kids; and recently joined forces with the non-profit organization Celebrate the Military Child (co-founded by…you guessed it, a mom!). These relationships continue to develop and strengthen with time, and are an imperative part of the Kid Ventures’ future.

Working with women owned businesses is an important philosophy for Kid Ventures because Kid Ventures itself was conceptualized by Debbie Solomon, a business woman and mother. With the help of her husband, Darren, the Solomon’s created an environment for families that mirrored their own values and visions of a family fun play space.

The next time you drop in to play at Kid Ventures, remember your visit is helping to support an expanding network of business minded women and mothers in your very own community. Who knew play could go so far and help so many?

12 Days of Christmas Crafts: Day 5
Stone Snowman

This little project is a great way to kick off the winter season with kids. The snowman can be scaled down or up according to what you want him for, don’t limit yourself to a doorstop; these little guys can work as paperweights, yard art or just something fun to sit on your mantle!
What You Need:
Glue
Acrylic Paint, various colors
Felt square (color of your choice)
Scissors
3 rocks, similarly sized. Also, Look for stones that have at least one slightly flat side to make assembling these easier.

What To Do:
1. Decorate your snowman first with the acrylic paint. Add a face, buttons, boots, whatever you please! You can leave your snowman skin natural (stone colored), or paint it with pain acrylic paint. Allow ample drying time before assembling your “stoneman”.
2. Once dry, stack your stones and glue together.
3. Using your felt square and glue, create a scarf for your snowman.

Hand and Footprint Reindeer Tshirt

Things you need:
* Plain T-Shirt in any light color, that will accommodate the hilds footprint
* Brown Acrylic Paint or brown fabric paint
* Foam brush
* Newspaper
* Googly eyes
* Red pompom or jingle bell (bells must be sewn on for safety).
* Wet towel
* Your child

Things to do:
1. Fold newspaper and place inside the t-shirt, so your printing doesn’t come through to the back of the shirt. Its best to keep this in for the entire project.
2. Fill a container with brown paint and using your brush or sponge, paint a piece of newspaper,with a thick enough layer of paint to accommodate printing 3 times.
3. Start with the foot, and place it in the paint. Have the child stand with the painted foot, in the middle of the shirt. 4. Pull the foot from the shirt, and put it on the wet towel. This stops the child from sticking to anything with paint, as well as removing the paint.
5. Repeat step 4 using the child’s hands. Place the handprints on either side of the footprint to represent the reindeer antlers.
6. Using Fabric Glue, place on the eye’s and nose of your extremely Unique “Rudolf” the Red Nosed Reindeer. You can also use a jingle bell instead of the pompom, and decorate the “antlers” with other decorations such as smaller glittery pompoms if you like. Imagination is the key!
7. Allow to dry completely before wearing.

NOTE: Washing the shirt will remove the design, consider using permanent fabric paint to ensure your design doesn’t disapear in the wash, or create your craft on construction paper to keep year after year!

Peppermint Stick Candle Holder

These holiday Christmas candle holders are sweet in more ways than one! Make several of these candle crafts to keep and to give. As an alternative, consider using the same technique to cover a square or rectangular paper box to give or store Christmas cookies.

Things you need:
* Circular container, without the lid (Recycled coffee cans, food containers etc. are great eco friendly options)
* About 40 or so 4-1/2” peppermint sticks
* High shine glaze spray
* Super tacky glue
* Waxed paper

Things to do:
1. In a well ventilated area, lay the peppermint sticks on top of a few sheets of wax paper and spray with the glaze. Let the glaze dry completely.
2. Make a wide bead of glue along one side of a peppermint stick, and press it onto the side of the circular box. Make sure the bottom is lined up evenly with the bottom of the box. Repeat with each stick until the box is completely covered.
3. When the glue is dry, if you want the tops of the peppermint sticks to be even you can sand the tops though this is not necessary. Seal them with another coat of glaze.
4. Fill the box with the glass marbles and add the votive candle. Fill in around the candle with more of the marbles to keep the candle secure.
